Trailer: Sherlock Holmes

One of my most anticipated films of this year has fast become my most dreaded with the release of the official trailer.

While having Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock may work with myself holding him in fairly high regard I find myself in a tentative state as to whether the Sherlock Holmes franchise will fall victim to the dreaded Hollywoodisation that many a pre-existing franchise has succumbed to.

The trailer gives as much away as physically possible without being classed as a featurette, so you get a big picture of what to expect. What to expect, you ask? Elementary, my dear reader. Expect the Hollywood clichés that make the big bucks: action, guns, girls, a familiar hero motif, a “fall before a rise” narrative and some either dark or crude humor along the way, all condensed into a 2 hour feature.

I’m curious as to whether Guy Ritchie will hold the image of Sherlock Holmes true to Arthur Conan Doyle’s image, and while I’m sure the film will no doubt be as entertaining as it will be predictable, one thing is for sure: Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr working together cannot be a bad thing… surely?

Here’s the trailer. What do you think? Leave a comment. I’m interested to see what people think of what you see.

Sherlock Holmes Trailer

Sherlock Holmes is due to be released in cinemas on the 25th December, 2009. Two alternate trailers have been released, but I’m not going to do everything for you…

(Writer’s Note: What? Really? Christmas Day? Could that be possibly the worst release date of the year? Who is going to go to the cinema on Christmas Day, when they will be distracted by Christmas TV specials, turkey, a massive family gathering and of course presents?)
